Introducing SPLEWDI and the online hub
About SPLEWDI
Beacon Strategies, with support from Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network (CESPHN) is leading the imlementation of a regional approach to supporting and developing the suicide prevention Lived Experience (SP LE) workforce across Central and Eastern Sydney.
This project involves bringing together people working in the SP LE workforce across the region and using the best available evidence and local knowledge to create an action plan that builds on ‘what works’ while aiming to address current gaps in workforce development and support activities.
All 31 Primary Health Networks (PHNs) across Australia have received funding from the Australian Government as part of the Targeted Regional Initiatives for Suicide Prevention (TRISP) measure. This funding aims to support community-based suicide prevention activities that respond to local needs.
In 2023, CESPHN undertook a consultation process with local stakeholders, including service providers, Aboriginal community members and people with lived experience, to explore how to use this funding to strengthen the support available for people at risk of suicide in the region.
The Suicide Prevention Lived Experience Workforce Development Initiative (or SPLEWDI) was one of the priorities that emerged from this consultation.
SPLEWDI is a time-limited program of activities that commenced in April 2024 and is being delivered until June 2025. Key activities include:
establishing a guiding coalition of SP LE workforce representatives
hosting a regional forum to understand what is needed
developing an agreed ‘action plan’ of activities to develop and support the workforce
making resources, activities and connections available to the workforce as we implement the action plan
reflecting on what has been achieved, what we’ve learnt and what future opportunities exist following the implementation of SPLEWDI.
