Learning and Development Guide

A Guide that outlines relevant training & useful resources across a Lived Experience worker’s professional development pathway.

  • Improving training and onboarding was a key priority for SPLEWDI.

The need for a common guide that outlined helpful resources for peer workers and their managers to use was consistently identified.

In response, this guide was developed in collaboration with members of the region’s SP LE workforce aiming to:

    • Provide relevant information and resources to guide effective onboarding and recruitment of SP LE workers to prepare and support these vital roles

    • Link the SP LE workforce with training opportunities to support skill development and career progression.

  • This guide is intended to support:

    • Peer workers in the suicide prevention lived experience space

    • Managers and Supervisors including anyone who recruits and supports the SP LE workforce, in both clinical and non-clinical settings

    • Other staff - this guide may also be useful for other staff working alongside SP LE workers, as well as senior executives and employers. It has been designed to support efforts to enhance organisational readiness for engaging and supporting a SP LE workforce.

  • The content has been developed through consultation with the region’s SP LE workforce to identify what they considered most important and useful.  It was also informed by, and draws on, existing work at the national and state levels.

    This guide:

    • aims to provide clear and concise information

    • is not designed to be an exhaustive list of available information, training, and resources.

Whether you’re a member of the workforce, or you manage peer workers, we hope the information in the guide is helpful within your context.

Please note that the guide was a point-in-time snapshot of the resources available in mid-2024 — it shouldn’t be considered an exhaustive list and may not be current, as new resources continue to be developed.

Take a look through the resources and opportunities below.

The Guide is organised according to four key phases of a Lived Experience worker’s development pathway - recruitment and onboarding, the first 12 months of employment, and ongoing professional support and career progression.
